Listen to me speak on the current events of the animation industry!
There is a vast array of types of media we can consume. Personally, the medium of animation is my favorite! Animation can tell stories in such unique and impactful ways. When most people think of animation, Disney is the first thing to come to mind. This is because Disney popularized and developed the animation that is used today. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the first English and technicolor feature animation. After the classic fairytale rendition, animation became a world wide sensation.
While Disney can surely be credited with innovations in the animation industry, there are so many animators, creators, and storytellers outside of the popular corporate giants that are known today. In fact, these massive companies are in many ways making the path to success far more difficult for small animators. The Los Angeles Times speaks on the rise of streaming platforms and the reality of them prioritizing finances over creativity. Describing how streaming services are “scrapping numerous projects and removing existing titles from their platforms completely” due to budget cuts. These mainstream studios and platforms are also no stranger to cutting shows due to brand image and creative differences.
While many shows have faced the hardships of working under large corporations, recently, small production studios have found success from working with big names like Amazon and Netflix. The small studio, Glitch Productions, had their popular show The Amazing Digital Circus, acquired by Netflix. Similarly, Amazon has bought Vivienne Medrano’s shows Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss for more seasons. While it can be complicated having large companies buy out small animation projects, there are also many pros. These studios are able to have their stories reach new audiences and are able to receive the funding that allows them to have access to better animation resources and technology.
